Navigating Digital Transformation: Global Perspectives, Human-Centered Futures
November 2nd – 7th 2026 in Bielefeld, Germany
From 2nd to 7th of November 2026, international alumni of the Institute for Diaconal Science and Diaconal Management (IDWM) at Bielefeld University will gather in Bielefeld for the alumni conference "Navigating Digital Transformation: Global Perspectives, Human-Centered Futures".
The participants hold leadership positions in churches, social service organisations and civil society organisations in different parts of the world. They bring experiences from diverse social, political and cultural contexts.
Together, they form the International Community of Diaconic Management (ICDM), an international alumni network of the IDWM that promotes professional exchange, mutual learning and long-term cooperation.
What Is the Conference About?
The Alumni Conference focuses on one key question: How can digital transformation be shaped in a responsible and human-centred way?
Around the world, digitalisation is changing the work of churches and social organisations. It creates new opportunities for education, communication and collaboration, while also raising important ethical, social and organisational questions.
How can digitalisation promote social inclusion? What responsibilities do churches and social organisations have in times of digital change? And how can digital developments be shaped in ways that respect different social and cultural contexts?
One of the strengths of the Alumni Conferences is the diversity of its international perspectives. What is taken for granted in one country may be difficult or even impossible in another because of differences in infrastructure, financial resources or social conditions. The conference week offers space to share these experiences, learn from one another and develop new ideas for shaping digital transformation together.
Topics of the Conference Week
The Alumni Conference is based on the idea that expertise exists in many places. Participants are not only invited to learn from one another but also to shape the programme by contributing their own experiences and perspectives on digital transformation. We therefore encourage participants to reflect on the relevance of the conference theme within their own professional and cultural contexts and to actively contribute topics, questions and examples from their work.
The conference combines academic input, practice-oriented working formats and intercultural exchange. Topics include:
- digital inclusion and social justice,
- ethics and leadership in times of digital transformation,
- digitalisation and organisational development,
- digitalisation and sustainable development,
- artificial intelligence and social responsibility,
- international good practices from different countries and fields of work.
The programme will provide keynote lectures, workshops, peer-learning formats, visits to regional practice partners and many opportunities for personal exchange. Participants will reflect on challenges from their own professional, regional and socio-cultural contexts and develop ideas for shaping digital transformation within their organisations, communities and countries.
A key highlight of the conference week will be the Forum Diakoniewissenschaft on Friday, 6 November 2026. The annual forum will conclude the conference week and bring together alumni, researchers, practitioners and leaders from diaconia, churches and social organisations for professional exchange and discussion.

Returning to Bielefeld
The IDWM and Bielefeld University are the common point of reference for the alumni network. The alumni have studied here, established professional contacts and gained their first experiences of international exchange. The Alumni Conference offers an opportunity to reconnect, strengthen existing relationships and further develop the network through personal encounter.
At the same time, Bielefeld, with its university, diaconal institutions and innovative practice partners, provides an excellent setting for discussing current questions of social and digital transformation from both academic and practical perspectives. The close connection between research, teaching and practice characterises the work of the IDWM and forms the intellectual background of the Alumni Conference.
The conference week is therefore more than a professional training event. It is a space for encounter, shared reflection and international collaboration in addressing the global challenges of digital transformation.
